History

The history of the de Maere family, in the Land of Waas, stretches across many generations and unfolds mainly in the second half of the fourteenth century.

As important officials and industrialists in the city of Sint-Niklaas, they put their mark on the local history up to the early nineteenth century.
Since the mid 19th century the name and the family de Maere have also been linked to the domain on the border between Aartrijke and Torhout.

In 1865 they bought an estate named ‘d’Aerdenhutte north of the ‘Verloren Kost’, the rough and deserted swamps and moors amidst the vast domain of Wijnendale and the large Bulskamp field. They dominated the history in that area until the late 20th Century.
